Residential Painting Origins

Would you be surprised that house painting can trace its history back to the 1400's? Sometime between the late 1400s and 1502, two "guilds" got together to paint and stain England.

A guild is a group of businesspeople and or merchants that decide they're going to oversee their chosen craft.

The two guilds, in this case, were the Painters and Stainers guild. Think about it. A group of people came together to oversee the painting and staining industry over 500 years ago, and here you are, looking for someone to paint or stain your house or business.

The excellent news it product, technologies, and techniques have come a long way since 1502.

What's even crazier is the Painters and Stainers guild needed permission from the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Once granted the right to merge, they planned to protect their trade secrets. Not sure how secret painting can be, but apparently, that's what happened.

Eventually, the merged Painters guild asked for and received protection from Parliament passed a law in 1606 protecting their trade secrets from other trades like carpenters and such.

Wheaton, IL is Born

The city of Wheaton IL was founded near or around 1830 and before 1838 when Erastus Gary claimed 790 acres of land near Warrenville.

The Wheaton brothers, Warren and Josh, collectively claimed a total of 940 acres of land. Warren claimed 640 acres and Josh 300 acres.

Somewhere around 1848, they both granted the Chicago Union Railroad three miles of right away, which the railroad named the depot, Wheaton.

In 1859, Wheaton was incorporated as a village, where Warren served as its first president. In 1890 it was incorporated as a city.

The city of Wheaton's first mayor was Judge Elbert Gary, son of the founder of Gary, Indiana, Erastus Gary.
